No One Preaches Now

On a long stretch near Elton, Texas I saw this image in passing. A lonely building and a sign announcing its sale. As I took the picture I wondered how many sermons, baptisms, weddings and funerals long since forgotten occurred within those walls.

No One Preaches Now

A small church in the Texas High Plains. There isn't even a stop sign here. Besides falling into disrepair is the place that the minister's name was has been "whited out" on the schedule of services sign.

Old and New Texas Money

A wind farm on a former cotton field that was also an oil field between Slaton and Post, Texas.

Freshest Gas Available

A State of Texas historical landmark in Dickens, Texas Bob's oil well is a closed gas station.

Why is it closed? The picture is being taken from the parking lot of an Allsups convenience store.

Palace Theater, Hamlin Texas

One of many closed or repurposed Palace theatres in Texas.
This one is in Hamiln, Texas

Tex Randall

In Canyon, Texas there is a large statue that was built in 1959 as "Texas Biggest Texan". He is 47' tall and weighs 7 tons.
Restored in 1989, in the following 10 years he has fallen in to disrepair as the western wear store he is standing on has closed.

Zephyr Store and Lodge

A working store in Zephyr, Texas.
The interesting thing about this to me is that Zephyr was never that big in the first place. However, that small square in the middle of the second floor signifies that this was a site of the Mason's lodge there when the structure was built.

The building doesn't exist anymore. A tornado came through and destroyed it.

Crime DOESN'T Pay

I just love the text of the Crimestoppers sign next to a series of 1940's-50's boarded up store fronts in "downtown" Coleman, Texas.

The Lunch Bucket

A place to get a quick bite in Hamlin, Texas. This was actually a movie set and never was actually a diner.

Underwood's

Underwood's was a chain of franchises at one time and the chopped bar-b-q, orange potato salad, all you can eat yeast rolls and cherry/peach cobblers were a staple from the restaraunt on Route 66 in Amarillo for my family in the 1960's.
Sadly, the franchise locations have slowly all closed and the only one left is the family-owned site in Brownwood, Texas.
I traveled about an hour out of my way on a recent trip just to experience Underwood's once more.

Boarded Up in Santa Anna

One of many churches in small Texas towns that are just fading away. This one is in Santa Anna, Texas
